Ami Col Became the Brand to Watch at Sephora. Ami Cole, founded in 2021 to cater to the demands of people with darker skin tones, will be available at the 277 U.S. Sephora doors in December.
Diarrrha N’Diaye Mbaye, the founder of the makeup label Ami Cole, is having an amazing full-circle experience.
After the launch of Ami Cole back in the year 2021 to provide high-quality cosmetics to people who have darker skin tones, N’Diaye-Mbaye is now able to secure her first retail collaboration with Sephora -which is where the founder had an associate previously in sales in her college days during her time at Syracuse University.
N’Diaye-Mbaye has since completed stints with L’Oreal and Glossier before harnessing her innate ability to develop products in her personal brand Ami Cole. The brand will be available on the internet and in 277 U.S. Sephora doors beginning December. 30. “It’s been both exciting and exciting to realize that our theory was true people of color are searching for new ways to make themselves stand in the world with makeup while looking like them by being who they are and being seen beyond the range of shades, and makeup fashion generally,” N’Diaye-Mbaye said.
Ami Cole launched in May 2021 and featured three products: a skin tint lipstick oil, a highlighter, and a skin tint. Today, the brand’s portfolio includes the following:
- Concealer mascara.
- Loose powder eyebrow products.
- An incense burner.
- A bucket hat is priced between $19 and $133.
“When I think about the brand and our products, I consider how we can go beyond our makeup bags,” said N’Diaye-Mbaye. Her 360-degree strategy for building brands was partly influenced by her experiences growing up in the Harlem, New York, hair salon run by her mom, Aminata, or Ami for short.
“Growing up as a child in Harlem was a whole spirit and culture that made our perception of beauty. That was because of the tunes being played on the radio as well as it was the Apollo Theater two blocks away, and ‘Moesha’ was playing on the television; everything is what made the salon unique,” N’Diaye-Mbaye recalled.
New shades of concealer and skin tint are on the way for Ami Cole and are available on Thirteen Lune, whose Lip Treatment Oil — a bestseller — is available on the internet through Violet Grey and Goop.
“Each new launch has an individual moment driven by the community, while others are driven by awards, such as The Allure Best of Beauty Awards; It’s been a wild year and a half, but we’re only just beginning,” N’Diaye-Mbaye said.
While the founder could not speak about sales projections for Ami Cole, according to industry sources, Ami Cole is poised to achieve $2.5 million in revenue at the end of 2022.
“In the next stage of our lives, brand recognition, identity, and affinity will be crucial. Sephora is repeatedly proving that they’re the top choice to help develop brand recognition and visibility,” N’Diaye-Mbaye said of the reasons she wanted to work with the retailer.
Alison Hahn, senior vice director of merchandising makeup and fragrance at Sephora, shared her enthusiasm in an email sent to Beauty Inc, writing, “Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye is adamantly committed to transforming the standards of the beauty industry. We are proud of her determination to provide these products to the most disadvantaged customers.”
In the end, N’Diaye-Mbaye has global strategies for Ami Cole. She is looking to expand in the U.K. — where the beauty scene is in a frenzy of late as well as Africa.
“My eyes are focused on the prize: I aim to be in as many brown and black hands as I can,” N’Diaye-Mbaye said. If you wish to be more beautiful as soon as possible, Tower 28’s First-Ever Mascara is for you.
